CATS & DOGS FOSTERING

  • by

Fostering a cat or dog can be a very rewarding experience. It provides a temporary home for an animal in need and helps them recover from neglect, abuse, illness or injury. When you foster an animal, you’ll also be freeing up space in animal shelters so that they can rescue more animals in desperate need. Here are some of the benefits of fostering a cat or dog:

Helping animals in need: Fostering a cat or dog provides a temporary home for an animal in need, and helps them recover from neglect, abuse, illness, or injury.

Saving lives: By fostering an animal, you’ll be freeing up space in animal shelters so that they can rescue more animals in desperate need.

Socialization: Fostering a cat or dog can help socialize them and prepare them for their forever home.

Learning experience: Fostering a cat or dog can be a great learning experience for both children and adults. It teaches responsibility, compassion, and empathy.

Temporary commitment: Fostering a cat or dog is a temporary commitment, which means you can enjoy the benefits of having a pet without the long-term commitment.

It sounds cute, but “kitten season” can mean a lot of little cats in need of our help. We are looking for foster carers for all the young kittens that will be coming through. If you can help even in an emergency to take kittens in for a couple of days to give us time to find alternative foster carers would be great. We also need lots of cat carriers, so if you have any in good condition lying around and would like to donate them, we would be very grateful.

Roscommon SPCA is a volunteer organization that rescues cats and dogs and finds them permanent homes. We do not have a shelter or sanctuary, so we rely on our foster volunteers to take care of the cats until they are adopted. We urgently need more foster homes, because we often have to pay for boarding the cats in vets’ kennels, which is very expensive and stressful. – Fostering a cat is a rewarding experience, as you help them recover from their past and get ready for their future. – Roscommon SPCA covers all the medical costs and health checks for the cats. – You will also get support and guidance from our team.

We have a special mission to find foster homes for senior dogs who would otherwise end up in kennels. Many older dogs, especially collies, are waiting in pounds for a loving and safe place to stay. If you want to make a difference in the life of an oldie, consider fostering.

How do I prepare my home for a foster pet?

To prepare your home for a foster pet, you should first pet-proof your home to protect the animal and your belongings. Here are some tips to help you get started:

  1. Designate a space: Choose a room or area in your home where you can keep your foster pet separate from your pets if you have any.
  1. Remove hazards: Remove any hazardous items such as chemicals, sharp objects, and small items that could be swallowed.
  1. Secure your home: Make sure your home is secure by checking for any holes or gaps in fences, gates, or doors.
  1. Provide supplies: Provide your foster pet with food and water bowls, a bed, toys, and a litter box (if fostering a cat).
  1. Prepare your family: Prepare your family members, especially children, for the arrival of your foster pet. Teach them how to interact with the animal and set boundaries.
  1. Be patient: Be patient with your foster pet as they adjust to their new environment. Give them time to explore their new surroundings and get comfortable.
