Cats Neutered Through The Marchig Animal Welfare Trust 2024
Roscommon SPCA has been inundated with requests for assistance in spaying and neutering cats, not just within County Roscommon but also from neighboring counties. We are incredibly thankful to The Marchig Animal Welfare Trust for their generous grant, which has enabled us to provide support to those in need.
Some of the cat colonies we’ve encountered are quite large, with some numbers reaching up to twenty cats and above. We’ve been asked to assist with Trap Neuter and Return (TNR) efforts for several colonies, including some in the Athlone area and a particularly large colony in Sligo Town, which has over 40 cats. This ongoing challenge is one we tackle every day. With veterinary costs on the rise, our services are also becoming more expensive. We can only continue our work thanks to the generous support we receive.
Currently, the cost for each individual cat, including flea and worm treatments at certain veterinary practices, can reach up to €110.00, a significant increase from around €60.00 just a few years ago.
We also received a request for help with a TNR programme on Inis Mór, The Aran Islands from a person living there. Unfortunately we did not have the volunteers or finance to help.
The Marchig Animal Welfare Trust was established in 1989 by the late Madame Jeanne Marchig of Geneva, because of her deep concern for nature and animals and in memory of her husband, the painter Giannino Marchig.
The objects of the Trust are to protect animals and to promote and encourage practical work in preventing animal cruelty and the relief of animal suffering.
These objects are pursued by the Trust in two ways, Grants and Awards.
We are delighted to have received a grant of €8,000.00 in 2023 from the The Marchig Animal Welfare Trust to help towards the cost of the TNR program for homeless and stray cats in County Roscommon. Your contribution has made a remarkable difference in helping the vast number of cats that have been Spayed and neutered in the County.
