Halloween is a time for fun and festivities, but it can also bring unexpected risks and stress for our beloved pets. Here are some important tips to help you protect your furry friends during the spooky season:
Calm Their Senses
Pets’ ears are much more sensitive than ours, so the unusual sounds of doorbells, fireworks, and parties can be unsettling. Create a quiet, comfortable space where your pets can retreat and feel safe. Using calming diffusers or familiar toys can also help ease their anxiety.
Watch Their Treats
Many common Halloween sweets—especially chocolate, sugar-free candies containing xylitol, grapes, and raisins—are harmful or even toxic to pets. Keep all treats well out of reach and remind family and visitors not to share their candy with your animals.
Dress for Comfort
If you choose to dress your pet up, make sure their costume allows free movement, doesn’t restrict breathing or vision, and is free from choking hazards. Sometimes a simple festive collar or bandana is the safest way to join in the fun.
Control the Door Traffic
The excitement of trick-or-treaters can stress pets and increase the risk of escapes. During peak hours, keep pets in a quiet room away from the front door with access to water, toys, and their bed. Always ensure your pet’s ID tags and microchip details are current.
Secure Decorations
Keep lit pumpkins, candles, electrical cords, and small decorations out of your pet’s reach to prevent accidents. Curious noses and paws can quickly turn a spooky decoration into a hazard.
