She arrived at just seven weeks old—tiny, vulnerable, and impossibly innocent. What I didn’t realise was that behind those wide, trusting eyes was the energy of a tiny tornado. Nothing could have prepared me for the whirlwind that swept through my once-quiet home. Every room became her playground. She explored every corner, climbed anything she could reach, chased imaginary prey, and transformed the simplest household objects into exciting new adventures.
There were days when I honestly wondered who was training whom.
Yet beneath all that boundless energy was a remarkable little kitten with an extraordinary ability to teach. Tabitha showed me just how resilient kittens can be when they are given love, patience, and a safe place to grow. Each day brought new milestones. Watching her gain confidence, learn to trust, and reveal her mischievous personality was a privilege. The frightened little kitten who had first arrived at my door gradually blossomed into a happy, affectionate companion full of curiosity and life.
The joy of fostering vulnerable kittens is difficult to put into words. From the very beginning, you know they are only borrowing a place in your heart until their forever family comes along. Your job is to help them grow strong, healthy, and confident enough to begin the next chapter of their lives. Every gentle purr, every playful leap, and every peaceful nap is a quiet reminder that you are making a real difference.
Of course, fostering also brings bittersweet moments. Saying goodbye is never easy. By the time a kitten is ready to leave, tiny paw prints have found their way across your home—and deep into your heart. But there is enormous satisfaction in knowing that you have given a vulnerable little life the very best possible start and helped prepare them for a loving future.
Looking back now, Tabitha was so much more than my first foster kitten. She became my teacher, my entertainer, and my guide into a world I had never expected to discover. She filled the silence left by the loss of my beloved dogs with laughter, purpose, and hope.
And then something unexpected happened.
Tabitha never left.
She became my very “failed foster”—a tiny tortoiseshell with a big personality who quietly decided that my home was already her forever home. What had begun as an attempt to ease the loneliness after losing my dogs became the start of an extraordinary new chapter. That fearless seven-week-old hurricane didn’t just fill an empty house—she opened my heart to an entirely new purpose.
Through her, I discovered that fostering doesn’t simply change the lives of vulnerable kittens. It changes the life of the person who opens their home to them.
At seventy-two years of age, I learned that it is never too late for a new adventure, never too late to discover a new purpose, and never too late to have your heart stolen by a tiny tortoiseshell kitten.
Thank you, Tabitha.
“I thought I was fostering a kitten in need of a home, but in truth, Tabitha was helping to heal a heart that needed her just as much.”
