Making Your Garden Safe for Pets This Summer

  • by

As the weather warms up, our pets spend more time exploring the garden — and a few simple checks can make that space much safer for them. Many common plants, fertilisers, and garden features can pose risks without us realising.

🌿 Plants to watch out for Some popular summer plants — including lilies, foxglove, azalea, rhododendron, and daffodil bulbs — can be toxic if chewed. If you’re unsure about a plant, it’s always best to double‑check before letting pets roam freely.

🧴 Chemicals & fertilisers Slug pellets, weed killers, lawn treatments, and fertilisers can be harmful to curious pets. Opt for pet‑safe alternatives where possible, and keep pets indoors until treated areas are fully dry.

💧 Water features & ponds Ponds, water barrels, and even paddling pools can be tempting for pets. Make sure they’re covered or supervised, especially for smaller animals or pets who aren’t confident around water.

🌞 Shade & hydration Provide plenty of shaded areas and fresh water outdoors. Pets can overheat quickly in summer, even on mild days.

🪴 Secure boundaries Check fences and gates for gaps — summer is prime “adventure season” for pets who love to wander.

A few small changes can make your garden a safe, happy space for your pets all summer long.
