The Five Freedoms of Animal Welfare
Animals deserve lives free from suffering, and the Five Freedoms set the standard for what every animal should have:
- Freedom from hunger and thirst — access to fresh water and a nutritious diet that supports full health and vitality.
- Freedom from discomfort — a safe, appropriate environment with shelter and a comfortable resting place.
- Freedom from pain, injury, or disease — prevention where possible, and rapid diagnosis and treatment when needed.
- Freedom to express natural behaviour — enough space, proper facilities, and the companionship of their own kind.
- Freedom from fear and distress — care and conditions that protect animals from mental suffering.
These principles guide everything we do at Roscommon SPCA, shaping how we rescue, rehabilitate, and advocate for animals across the county.
